What is the Most Reliable Truck You Can Buy?

You’ve probably seen a number of truck commercials or online ads that throw around words like “dependable,” “reliable” and “capable.” But what do these words actually mean in the context of pickup trucks? In a lot of cases, they aren’t much more than marketing buzzwords.

After all, a pickup truck can’t exactly be considered reliable until it’s been put through the test of ownership, and that is a test that takes time. Of course, you can’t judge a vehicle upon its initial launch, so it is hard to honestly say that a vehicle is reliable when it has done little to prove it.

So, with all that said, can we say with any certainty what the most reliable pickup truck available on the market is? Well, it’s not easy to say, but we can look at models that are a few years old to see how they’ve handled the trials of ownership. From there, we can generally assume that future models of that same generation of vehicle should be just as dependable.

2020 Most Reliable Truck

Therefore, let us take you back to 2020, which is the model year of vehicles that were assessed for J.D. Power’s award titled America’s Most Reliable Full-Size Truck After 3 Years of Ownership. It’s a long title, but the point is that the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 took home the top spot.

To determine this ranking, J.D Power looked at four key categories that included Quality & Reliability, Driving Experience, Resale and Dealership Experience. The truck did particularly well in the area of Resale, which looks at the expected rate of depreciation, scoring a 90 out of 100 in that category. The other scores consisted of 86 out of 100 in Quality & Reliability, 82 out of 100 in Driving Experience and 88 out of 100 in Dealership Experience.

In order to achieve the top spot, the Sierra 1500 had to beat out other pickups like the Toyota Tundra and Chevy Silverado 1500. Overall, it was a tight race, but the Sierra beat the Tundra and Silverado by 2 points, while beating the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 by 3 points.
