Car and Driver Takes the Canyon AT4X AEV To the Limit

In a recent test by Car and Driver magazine, they called the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV “the grandest Canyon,” as GMC has added loads of equipment and features that make it more than just an off-road truck. It’s a truck that can be driven every day on the road and then used for wild adventures. The standard 2.7-liter TurboMax engine provides 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque and allows the Canyon to tow as much as 7,700 lbs in Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels. However, the AT4X trim tows up to 6,000 lbs when properly equipped. The available ProGrade Trailering System adds an integrated trailer brake controller, an in-vehicle trailering app, a 220-amp alternator, and Blind Zone Steering Assist with Trailering.

What Does the AEV Package Add?

The AEV package brings exclusive 17-inch Salta beadlock-capable wheels that are wrapped in 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, 12.2 inches of ground clearance, a 1.5-inch higher ride than the standard AT4X, and Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers that can smooth out any surface you will drive on. The magazine found that the interior was whisper quiet, even with the large, off-road tires, at only 67 decibels. The truck’s underbody has more panels to protect the vehicle from debris, rocks, boulders, and the like. The interior features red stitching throughout the cabin, knobs, and switches are also lined in red, and the AT4X AEV logo is stitched on the headrests. GMC added four extra auxiliary connections for owners to add their own aftermarket projects, such as additional lighting.
