Artist Renders a Beautiful 2023 Buick Roadmaster Estate

Car guys like station wagons. It may seem counter-intuitive that the same enthusiasts who generate markets for coupes, convertibles, and sports cars would pine for what was once the most practical, and mundane symbol of suburban family life. Yet take just a short trip through the monthly car magazines in the Buick GMC of Rochester service waiting room, and it won’t be long before you find a writer waxing nostalgic about an old station wagon of the past, or crying foul that some station wagon in a foreign market isn’t coming to our shores.

The other irony is that we are essentially all driving station wagons now. Here at Penz Buick GMC, if it isn’t a pickup truck, it is either a truck-based SUV or unibody crossover, but they are essentially all station wagon-shaped vehicles that do station wagon things. But to the wagon fans, these vehicles don’t count. From their point of view, just because a vehicle has a long roof and can carry cargo doesn’t dictate that it has to have off-road intentions. They would rather have a vehicle with a sedan-like low center of gravity that punches a smaller hole in the air that just has a roof-height cargo area.

If a 30-year Old Roadmaster Estate and an Enclave Avenir had a Baby…

Such would appear to be the motivation of Photoshop artist jlord8 who tapped into Buick’s long history of full-size station wagons and gave us a beautiful rendition of a 2023 Roadmaster. “Roadmaster” is quite possibly the greatest name ever given any automobile and for decades it was applied to big Buicks of all body styles. While the Roadmaster Estate has a history dating back to 1935, jord8’s appears to be influenced mostly by the last Roadmaster Estate of 1991 – 1996 and the current Enclave Avenir. The 90s-era Roadmaster Estate was actually a pretty sleek affair, the potential of which inspired many enthusiasts to lower the body, give it aggressive aftermarket wheels, and sometimes swap its existing V8 for something of the Corvette variety. 

That latest Roadmaster’s influence is most evident in the jlord8’s rendition in its general proportions, D-pillar angle, and partially skirted rear fenders. From the Enclave Avenir, he brings a low profile version of its front-end styling, the wheel design, and the sweeping front and rear fender sculpting that are in themselves traditional Buick design elements dating back to the mid-40s. The result is quite beautiful and entirely producible. 

Not Now, but Maybe in the Future?

With crossovers becoming the norm across the country it seems that it is only a matter of time before a manufacturer produces a model as a lower sleeker “sport wagon” with an on-road focus and jlord8 has given Buick a great head start on the idea.
