Turbo-Diesel Engine Added to 2024 Sierra 1500 Lineup
2024 GMC Sierra 1500 Duramax Engine Specs
It takes more than one thing to make a pickup a good truck. But at the heart of every truck is the engine, and without a strong engine, a pickup just won’t be able to handle all the jobs you’re going to throw at it. When we talk about a truck being capable, dependable and reliable, it all starts with what is underneath the hood powering the whole thing.
In the case of the GMC Sierra 1500, a strong engine has never been a question. Capable engines are a standard feature on all GMC models. Of course, they aren’t all created equal. Each engine has its own areas in which it excels and its own level of capability.
Recently, this capability was expanded for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 after GMC added a Duramax turbo-diesel engine option to the lineup. So, let’s talk about it.
What Sierra 1500 Models Have a Turbo-Diesel Engine?
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this Duramax engine, as the power plant was featured in the 2023 lineup for select Sierra 1500 models. This engine was an updated version compared to past Duramax engines.
For the 2024 model year, the Duramax turbo-diesel will be equipped to the Sierra 1500 AT4X trim level. The AT4X has long been a model known for its offroad capability, and that capability gets even better with this new Duramax engine. Along with the improved engine, AT4X models also receive retractable assist steps, an available active exhaust, front and rear e-locking differentials, a 12-speaker sound system and some massaging front leather seats (because you can’t ever be too comfortable while driving offroad).
We don’t yet know what the starting MSRP for the AT4X model will be, but we do know when it will be available. GMC has announced that the model with its Duramax engine will be going on sale later this summer.

Sierra 1500 Duramax Specs
As for the Duramax engine itself, it will surely make any price worthwhile. The turbo-diesel unit puts you in control of up to 305 horsepower and an incredible 495 lb-ft of torque, making it great for towing. For reference, this is a 10 percent horsepower increase and 7.6 percent torque increase compared to the Duramax engine in 2022 Sierra 1500 models. The turbo-diesel will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
It’s hard to imagine the GMC Sierra 1500 getting any better, but it seems like it just has for the 2024 model year. If you would like to stay updated on its availability for a test drive, please don’t hesitate to give us a call here at Buick GMC of Rochester.
